My First Experience With a Computer
I cannot forget how excited I was when I first bought my own computer. Like a mother who spends time sewing and knitting for her newborn baby, I spent hours and hours to sparkle my computer. I waited a long time to buy a brand new computer. I had to work more hours and saved money to buy a computer. I did not want to buy a cheap computer, but I wanted to buy a professional one. Was I professional on computer? No! I was not. I did not even know how to type, but I was sure that my expensive com puter could make me a computer expert. 17 inches monitor, color printer, two speakers and well-designed fancy keyboard made me just happy by looking at them on my desk.
What I knew about my computer was how to turn on and off by pressing the big button at the bottom of my computer. I turned on the computer and had no idea what to do next, but I was still happy. I just clicked on everything and did not know how t o go back to the previous screen. Whenever I had problems with my computer, I just turned off the computer. It was pretty simple to clear my computer problems by pressing the power switch. The power switch was a problem solver.
Realizing an expensive computer could not make me a computer genius did not take a long time. Whenever my computer was on, I started to have a headache because I did not know what I was doing. When I tried new things on my computer, it always st opped me with warning signs. I could not understand what my computer wanted me to do.
My computer really needed to have serious counseling sessions. When I was at home alone, I disciplined my computer. "Hey! You computer listen. I do not think you know who you are. I am the one who tells you what to do. I am a commander, and y ou are my servant. If I tell you to draw a picture, you need to draw me a picture. Do you understand? How dare you to show me stop sign! Please do not tell me what to do. Who is the commander here? You just follow what I tell you to do."
Sitting in front of my computer was painful for me.

|Personal Narrative: My First Computer Essay - Personal Narrative My First Computer Wow, what an experience it was to see for the first time a machine that could think. This machine could do math, display graphics at the drop of a dime, and play two dimensional games (whic was all that was around back then). This wasn't something that you normally saw. This was something that seemed to come straight out of a science fiction film. At least that was what I thought. So my quest was clear to me. I was to learn how to manipulate a computer. Computer Own Computer Go Back New Computer Switch Commander Sure Desk Keyboard Speakers
Using computer seemed to be simple when my friends showed me how to use a computer. They did not turn off the computers as often as I did with my computer. When I got tired of turning on and of f the switch, my expensive computer was just placed on my desk and covered with dust. I regretted that I bought a computer to spend more than $1300 for nothing. I tried not to look at my computer whenever I studied on my desk because my blood pressure a lways went up each time I look at the computer. I had to learn how to be patient with my dame computer before I break it with a hammer in the garage.
One day, my Freshmen English Composition professor said, "Many of you are still turning in hand written papers. It is very hard for me to read some of your handwritings. From now on, I want you to type all the papers before you turn them in." Ty ping paper was not a big deal for me even though I did not really know how to use a computer. I could type letter by letter.
Typing two pages essay on the computer took me almost four hours to finish it. I was a person who could type with only two fingers but not with ten fingers. I tried very hard to type with ten fingers like other people, but my fingers did not want to follow my directions. Only two index fingers were well behaved, so I started to use only two fingers when I really had to type. Typing with two fingers took me much less time to finish two pages essay than typing with ten fingers. I was proud of my self that I could at least type until I went to the computer lab at California State University, Northridge to type my papers.
Everyone at the computer lab seemed to be very busy to work on the computers. People at the computer lab typed fast with ten fingers, which was just amazing to me. They typed like a crazy with ten fingers. I felt like I was in the typing competi tion, not in the school computer lab. I thought they had some kind of drugs before they came to the computer lab. I sat on the chair and started to type essay papers with my two professional fingers, letter by letter. I lowered my head and back as low as possible, so nobody could see me typing with only two fingers. It was embarrassing.
I hated computer and people who invented or designed the keyboard. "If they placed alphabet letters A through Z on the keyboard in the right order, my life should be much easier than today," I started to blame people who designed the keyboard. "T hen I can just use ten fingers just like other people at the computer lab, and my poor eyeballs do not have to keep in busy to look for unorganized letters on the keyboard." Typing essay on the computer with unorganized letters on the keyboard took me at least three hours more than writing essays on the papers.
I had to stop blaming computer geniuses and do something with my dame computer. I did not buy a computer to display on my desk. I bought a computer to educate myself and to become a computer nerd. I made a big decision. I registered for the com puter class at CSUN. On the first day of class, Dr. Aguardo, who taught me Computer Science said, "Computer can be a lot of fun and also they can be very confusing. More you know about computers, you will have more fun. First, you need to be a friend o f computers. So let's know them." She showed me the parts of a computer and explained what do they do. Learning new things steps by steps was easy to understand and some of them made sense. In the article "Enemies of Promise" by J. Michael Bishop, he says "Scientists take things apart in order to understand the whole, to sole the mystery an enterprise that we regard as one of the great, ennobling tasks of mankind (pg. 238)"
I massed up about three programs in the computer class. Whenever I made mistakes, I always said, "Oops! Dr. Aguado, there is something wrong with my computer. I cannot get in to the program." After I massed up all the computers, I always remind ed her that I did not do anything wrong. And I got up and moved to the other computer slowly. I never forgot what Dr. Aguado said on the first day of class to me. "Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Without mistakes, you cannot ever be success with com puters. Be a curious person." I just followed what she wanted me to do.
Believe or not, I got the highest score in my computer class. I did not even have to take a final exam because my score was high enough to get an "A." I know it was unbelievable, but I tried hard. I tried because using computer was fun and excit ing.
Do I still use two fingers when I type? No! I use ten fingers now. My other eight fingers got jealous of my two professional index fingers and decided to follow my directions. They are well behaving now. Still today, I make many mistakes while I type. Now I do not low my head and back anymore when I type at the computer lab. Also I do not blame people who invented computers as often as before. I am trying to be nice, but I still do not understand people who invented the keyboard did not arr ange the alphabet letters in the right order A through Z.

Computer Its Role in Life Today
The Age of Computers
Computers— The Modern Man’s Intelligence Machine
In this age of scienceand technology, humanity is witnessing an explosion of knowledge. Computer a machine that promises to beat man in various fields – is one the latest useful inventions word today. The computer fever his caught everybody from a child of three to an old man of seventy. Everyone is talking about computers networking from a child of three or an old man seventy. How important computer has become in life today. Every office, factory, modems, computer virus etc. This shows developed country in the world is equipped with a computer. A computer has already become an inseparable part of life. It helps a doctor I his diagnosis ; it helps an engineer in his multifarious activities; guides a pilot or a navigator to safety; it helps a public or a private official or businessman in more ways that one. It is an important part of every institution, every office and every establishment public or private in several countries.
A computer is basically an electronic calculating machine. It performs, complex and enormous calculation with tremendous speed, precision and diligence. It accepts data, performs operations according to instruction and provides the results of the operations. In addition to its speed in performing complicated calculations, the computer has an ability to reproduce, rearrange and reconstruct information that can prove an invaluable asset in science, medicine, technology or any other branch of knowledge.
The heart of the computer is the integrated circuit. Each circuit can carry out millions of calculations in a second. A computer is programmed first and then fed with a problem in the form of a code, be in FORTAN, ALGOL or COBOL.
The first computer was huge in size 51 feet in length and 8 feet in height. Soon computer technology was modified. They different phases of evolution of computers are conveyed by the term ‘generation’. We are now using the fifth egeneration computers in the advanced countries of the world. The development of computer is now directed towards a process of the miniaturization of the components. Today a chip of silicon, smaller than the thumb nail of an infant, can accommodate all the elaborate electronic circuits that make the brain of the computer. From the huge computer of earlier days, computer has covered a long road to Pentium Computers that are able to process complicated data in a matter of seconds.
The key to how artificial intelligence machines will work lies with new style programes and software. Communication between man and machine is expected to be raised to the level of human communication. The human brain is not capable of retaining, for example the massive and ever increasing base of medical knowledge. So the computer will acts as an assistant with all the information.
The Uses of computers are too many. The computer performs the assigned tasks in seconds. The solutions are correct to the minutest detail. Today there is a computer at the beck and call of every research worker, every senior doctor, engineer or technician. It is on the road to produce robots to assist the housewives in their daily household chores. Portable computers are being used by people in business to make complex calculations. The CAT Scanner provides doctors with a view of the whole human body. The computer has now entered almost every field of human activity. One can watch video CD’s and video conferencing, send volumes of data from one machine to the other in the farthest corner of the world ISDN exchanges have revolutionised the use of computers. A mere pressing of a button can off-load your heavy mail let you know all statistics on various subjects, place before you and control your other machines. Programmed computers are being used in controlling and monitoring the movement of traffic, reservation of seats in airways and railways, in educational institutions, in defense establishments, in ships and planes all over the world.
In India, computerization of important sectors like defense, energy, steel, mining, cement, railways, airlines, communication and education has already taken up. There is need for adequate trained manpower without which computers cannot be effectively utilized.
Although the use of computers has phenomenally grown, it has some fundamental limitations. The computer cannot exercise judgement or commonsense. It has to be meticulously instructed in the programme and it acts as it is instructed. It is also alleged that the privacy of people is being threatened as every detail regarding a person’s whole life can be squeezed into a few centimeters of computer tape. Also the use of computers is adding to unemployment all over the country as a single computer can do the work of hundreds of manual workers.
Though there are a few problems or irritants, it cannot be denied that computers are a boon to humanity. No country in the world can afford to ignore this very important machine.
The computers have so revolutionised the day-to –day life of human beings that it has encompassed its every activity. The explosion of Information Technology, the Website and the windows have thrown all the knowledge of the world at man’s feet. One can visit every nook and corner of the world and glean any sort of knowledge from website. And it is not the end but the beginning of a revolution.
