Kyoto Protocol Gcse Graphics Coursework

There are many strategies employed to minimise the impact of climate change.

To meet increasing global demands for energy, while reducing the risk of causing either damage to the environment or contributing to global warming, it is important that:

  • Developing countries reduce deforestation and increase afforestation - planting trees.
  • All countries find new types of energy, while developing and expanding existing sources more sustainable than fossil fuels.
  • Industries and domestic users of energy use it more efficiently and reduce needless waste.
  • Developed countries start to switch from fossil fuels to alternative sources of energy, such as solar, wind, tidal and hydroelectric power.

As developing countries start to use more energy they should be encouraged to develop more sustainable sources of energy and control their population growth so they use less.

The video below looks at green energy, particuarly wind and solar power.

The purpose of sustainability is to manage resources, so future generations can also use the resources. International concern has led many countries to try to reduce their use and consumption of carbon based fossil fuels.

World summits enable governments to get together and discuss global strategies. The Kyoto Protocol is an international treaty that sets binding obligations on industrialised countries to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

The Protocol recognises that developed countries are primarily responsible for the current high levels of greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity, and places a heavier burden on developed nations to reduce emissions. 191 countries agreed to the treaty.

The United States signed but did not ratify the Protocol and Canada withdrew from it in 2011. Many governments signed the Kyoto Protocol, committing them to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Some researchers doubt the commitment of some countries to this agreement. It is hoped that a new, more stringent agreement will be reached and applied from 2020.

The video below describes hydroelectric power in Loch Lomond.

- Беккер не мог поверить, что это говорит он. Если бы Сьюзан слышала меня сейчас, - подумал.  - Я тоже толстый и одинокий.
